Thanks for this info, Michael. It makes perfect sense. How do you handle it in practice? How much water a day? How much is 'enough'? Do you mulch heavily?

Alan,
As a cut flower grower of three years I learned that most bulb or tuber crops should be kept at a consitent water level to keep blooms from shattering or wilting over. Don't let the crops dry out!! Deep watering that works for tender annuals or perrenials dosen't work here. Steady as she goes. This will also help problems from intermittent rains.
