Both pyrethrum and rotenone are very photosensitive and degrade quickly. If used two or three times over a wide area, they will decimate your natural enemies and leave you exposed to an outbreak of pests such as aphids, whiteflies, mites, or thrips. Spraying these broad-spectrum killers on a trap crop of limited area is both organically acceptable and ecologically sound. Products with neem will work on the harlequin and its relatives (stinkbug, lygus bug), and they are non-toxic or only slightly toxic for beneficials. Neem products vary enormously in price and you get what you pay for. Alternately, if your trap crops are working well, harvest adult bugs, liquefy them, strain, and add to a neem product or insecticidal soap. The odor will repel would-be colonists.
