Hi Thom,
I always "helped" my cukes up the trellis by weaving the in and our on a weekly basis. They tend to be more twiners than climbers. I used trellis for small winter squash and miniature pumpkins and did the same thing for them. They are less vulnerable to squash bugs this way since the bugs have few places to hide.
