All this talk of farmers markets has reminded me of our local stall fee
structure, which may be foriegn to many of you.
Many local market use the following structure:
sales fee
<$50 $2
<$100 $4
<$200 $6
<$400 $8
>$400 $10
This, of course, depends on the honesty of the seller to pay the correct
fee. Some might find it suprising that the scheme has worked very well
for us, there have been no suspecions of under paying. You should
realize that we believe we have weeded out all dishonest sellers. This
scheme, over several years, has replaced flat rates of $5. Total stall
fee revenues have generally increased, that is, the average stall fee is
greater than $5.
We see the primary benefit as attracting the smaller growers that
provide so much of the atmosphere of the markets. It also encourages
growers to attend markets even when their supply is short.
