It can take quite a little while to download big files.

Some people pay by the size of the message and they get to
pay extra.

A nice technique is to poll the list as to who would like a
copy and ask the list members to contact you off list to get
them to give you their address off list. You then can be
more specific to who gets the atachments. If you get a lot
of responses then might as well post it to the list. What's
a lot? I don't know - maybe Liz can comment?

Another nice technique is to post your stuff to a listserver
achive. One post from you and anyone can get it at their
convenience.

An interesting thing about big ole honkin posts to an entire
list is it is a unsustainable practice as it does consume
electricity posting to hundreds of different places. There
have been some interesting and surprising figures on the
amount of electricity consumed by internet usage and it is
certainly is growing - especially as service gets faster.
The California power problems have jumped started some
interesting studies and figures.

Surprisingly enough the worse offender in terms of
unsustainable internet practices I have seen is the
SUSTAINABLE list server. The custom on that list is to quote
ALL the threads, attachments and raw HTML for each thread as
it continues on. Some of the message lengths can grow
incredibly huge and they are simply repeating the same stuff
written weeks ago. It seems ironic. I've not been on that
list for a while so it may have changed.

Speaking for myself, it costs me nothing extra but it is
timewise inconvenient waiting for the download to finish. We
get slow service out in the country here. I don't feel led
to complain much as you are dead on topic and supplying
useful and interesting stuff.

We appreciate your efforts.
