Last year we tried to put together an Artisans' Fair one Saturday a month.
The idea was to put together an event that would draw some potential
customers downtown and benefit the farmers' market as well. We chose
"Artisans'" instead of "Crafts" to distinguish the event from a craft fair.
The Artisans' Fair was to be located in the same parking lot but not
sprinkled among the farmers' market vendors.
Unfortunately, the organizer bailed on us and it never happened. The idea
was a good one though.
I do think it is a very good idea to separate vendors in general.
The farmers' market itself has a variety of vendors: vegetables, fruit,
baked goods, hot ready to eat food, plants, flowers, etc... This year the
hot food vendors will all have to locate together because of health
department regulations. They're going to have to have hot and cold running
water, electricity for refrigeration, etc...
We do have 'craft' vendors who sell aprons (she makes them), birdhouses (he
makes), etc... We do not allow things like Beanie Babies or garage sale
type vendors. In the fall there are a number of fall/halloween type
decorations most of the vendors sell. I make and sell corn wreaths and
other people do swags with broom corn and dried flowers. I wouldn't mind
doing herb wreaths some day.
This is a very difficult thing to define. It would be worthwhile to spend
some time defining this in a set of market rules.
