Here in South Jersey there are alot of tomato growers on very light soils
that can get
early field ripe tomatoes to auction by June 20th. thats two to three weeks
earlier than
everyone else and the incentive is the $40-50 a box price, and its not
uncommon for most
growers to bring 100-500 boxes every day, so there is good money to be made,
I delivered a
load of cabbage to a broker and saw 1000 empty tomato boxes from South
Carolina and 1000
full boxes along side them in NJ boxes, these guys were buying in southern
tomatoes and
repacking as local grown and making a big profit at the expense of the
legitimate growers,
it turns out organized crime was involved and the practice is quite illegal
and we always
look out for this stuff and report offenders, its only a matter of time
before these
practices move into your markets...
