My point exactly Bill. Ya can't grow 'em in Illinois. That's why I had to
go off on that vendor. This gives the market a bad name to the informed
consumer who comes to the market. Next thing you know we'll see Texas
1015's. I will point out the law on this at our next market meeting. You
wouldn't happen to have a reference for me on this would you?
And to compound this problem locally, there have been retail stores selling
"Vidalia onion sets" the last two springs. We got some calls at the
extension info desk about growing "failures" because, of course, they don't
grow to size because of day length.
I did visit one of the retailers and told him that he ought to advise his
customers about it. I suggested that he put a sign on them about day length
and tell them they would only mature to large bulbed scallions. He said,
"buyer beware" that's what his supplier sends him.
