Jacqueline,
The title of the book is Sunflower Houses, Garden Discoveries for Children
of all Ages
by Sharon Lovejoy. There are some real cute ideas like a ABC garden, a
miniature garden
and lots of other theme gardens. I don't know how practical it is for you
but some of
them may be simple enough the kids can do it on their own.
One summer I gave my daughter a small plastic aquarium and she went about
capturing
predator and prey bugs for her own eco-system. She loved it! We had a
little mini
compost pile in one corner and some earthworms. She would hunt for hours to
find the
right bugs to put in there. It was small enough she was able to carry it
around with
her. It might be good for your older kids. My boys were always happiest if
they could
be digging! They would spend the summer up to their eye balls in dirt! They
would
pretend they were digging for treasure. They also played indians alot. I
would give
them a few props to play with such as some feathers and headbands and then
let them go.
My kids love to play pioneers so they would gather food for the winter and
take it back
to their 'cabin' (tent). The little one would usually tag along with them.
I liked my kids to work in the garden but I got the most work done when
they would
play where I could see them but not entertain them.
I am sorry to hear you have to be so careful around your government
officals.
What a shame. Where are you?
Sue
