The Carolina Farm Stewardship Association (CFSA) is hosting its 15th
Annual
Sustainable Agriculture Conference at the Wilmington Riverside Hilton on
November 3-5, 2000. This year’s conference will feature Joel Salatin of
Polyface Farm in Swoope, VA, as keynote speaker. Mr. Salatin is a
nationally known speaker and practitioner of integrated livestock systems
and direct marketing to consumers (featured in the July 2000 issue of The
Smithsonian). He is famous for raising cows, chickens, hogs, and rabbits
in
an integrated, pasture-based approach that establishes healthy living
conditions for the animals and matches the carrying capacity of his land.
No animal manure waste is produced using this method and customers drive
from long distances to purchase his superior livestock products.
The conference will also feature 47 workshops with over 75 presenters on a
wide variety of topics from Beginning Organic Farming, to Advanced
Composting, to Sustainable Swine Production and Marketing. We have also
invited Meg Scott Phipps and Steve Troxler, the 2000 NC Agriculture
Commissioner candidates, to address the conference on Friday November 3rd.
In addition we will offer a fascinating Children’s Program, a riverboat
dinner cruise, farm tours on Sunday afternoon, and local/organic food at
all
meals. The conference has something of interest for all ages and skill
levels, from professional grower to backyard gardener.
