If you do not sterilize you increase the risk of disease. But the same is
true if you water too often, if your soil does not drain well, if you don't
provide good light, nutrition or aeration. The important thing to do is to
provide optimum growing conditions for the plant. Use fresh seed so it's
strength will make it less susceptible to pathogens. Do not use soil which
has supported the same crop in recent years, whether in the greenhouse or in
the field. If you use compost that has been generated using plant material
of the same species it should be composted properly (heated enough to
eliminate the pathogenic microbes). Preferably the compost would contain no
related plant material. Sterilization is no substitute for good growing
practices in the greenhouse.
