I found my plants needed the hardening off more for the sun than any
other single factor. In experiments I've done, hardened-off
transplants show less transplant shock than the non-hardened
transplants. I start with 2 hours first day in shade, 4 hours next
day-- part shade/sun, increasing by 2 hours daily in a decreasing
mixture of shade and sun for about 5 days.
I found they also were less shocked when transplanted at the 3-4 leaf
stage.
