Consistent germination factors depend on so many variables I overplant
to assure enough good transplants. I once read some advice by a
seasoned grower who stated he planted 2-3 times more than he needed
(1000 tomato plants versus 400 needed). I thought this was ludicrous
in the amount of time and labor involved, costs and wasted energy.
But I've learned the wisdom of his doing this--once the seedlings
were growing, he only transplanted the healthiest, most vigorous
plants from a large selection. I use his advice now, along with
presprouting large plant seeds--thus only planting out viable
seedlings, guaranteed to grow. I then sell the plants I don't plant
out, which created another market I had not considered before.
Germination is still spotty, but seeds are cheap, and overplanting
relieves alot of anxiety.
