B&S Releasing tap holder
I just got a 3/4" shank releasing tap holder, this one is a used B&S. The finish tapping spring was installed and the clutch didn't want to always catch when reversing so I took it apart... Wouldn't you know a ball bearing fell out and when directly into the only floor drain in the whole shop
I got on the B&S website and the drawing says it is supposed to be a "roll" and not a ball. I found a 3/16" dowel pin that looked about right as far as the required size and cut off a piece and put the holder back together. It works, but not very well. Sometimes it still doesn't like to back out when the spindle reverses.
Any one out there have a B&S 711-105-311 releasing tap holder they wouldn't mind taking apart? I paid $75 for it and B&S has a $50 min order, a gage pin the right diameter is $3.00, if the "roll" is supposed to be cylindrical and not a sprag. If it is supposed to be a sprag I'll have to order the correct part plus as many tap bushings as I can get for my $50, have a feeling that it won't be very many and I can make a tap bushings during breaks.
I have not had one apart for years. I do recall it is just a hardened steel roller. You need to orient the tap holder correctly so that gravity operates the roller. They can be assembled for either right or left hand taps. Forgot, but maybe there is a "top" marking.
