Apprentice
Can anyone suggest some reading materials for a new fella entering the world of manufacturing? I have hired my son (entry level) as a result of his interest in the family business, and would like to give him some after hours reading assignments. We are a job shop.

The entirety of keith fenner videos.....with the exception of his unsafe emery cloth usage on the lathe they are quite good....
Keith Fenner - YouTube
Especially because he covers stuff which is not exactly run of the mill. Using the lathe as a line bore and all the good stuff.

shop theory fifth edition
James Anderson and Earl E Tatro.
It is old info but does a pretty good job covering the basics. I still use it as a reference,

I will never understand that one, yeah. Even I manage to file with the left hand on the handle...despite being stubborn and 100% right handed....
But his "lets fix this major equipment f***up by customer videos" are wonderful... -
Machine shop trade secrets is one I had when I was a bit younger.
James A harvey- author
I still have it... Looks like its in good shape of your interested. -

In addition to the all the good suggestions mentioned - Tom Lipton's - "Metalworking Sink or Swim" is a good read. Also his youtube videos on oxtoolco.com. No affilliation.

You have a machine shop and want you son to look at the junk on youtube? Tublacain stuff is junk! I would use some of his stuff as how not to do! A shop teacher that probably never worked as a machinist! If he did he would be fired in the first week if working for a quality shop! The ever popular South Bend lathe??? If you have a shop get one of your best man to take him under his wing!

Job is a job, actual apprenticeships involve bookwork in intervals when your sent to trade school, the rest of the time you're working and not looking up how to make an air motor on youtube. Even better learning is going to bed at night after doing a part thats a bit out of his league, lying awake wondering if he screwed it up and is going to loose his job, best learning there is under the sun. Try to get one of those precious moments in at least once every few weeks.
If its going to be a strictly "homemade" apprenticeship I wouldn't bother trying to get to formal.
If someone hasn't had one or taught a few apprentices its hard to figure out how to plan the jobs for them so you still make a buck and they don't end up getting bored with jobs that are to easy or discouraged with to many jobs that make them step out of their comfort zone, and scrap all the time. It involves tremendous pressure on the teacher, especially if you teach them something wrong or they take what you say out of context and they screw it up and loose faith in youor confidence in themselves.
Kind of like homeschooling kids, sometimes a mans gotta take a sober look at himself to decide if he's up for the challenge, or else the kids gonna learn tons about how the earths 6000 years old, man walked with dinasaurs and nothing about mathematics. -
Modern Metalworking by Sandvik Coromant. Excellent information on not just cutting, but the theory behind it.

These are/were my text books from British Columbia Institute of Technology here in Canada.
I served my apprenticeship in a job shop, best training due to the variety IMHO.

I would have him read Practical machinist.... then you two could discuss different topics. If you are more of the business guy rather than the machining guy, give him to your top man and let them work together.
If he is being groomed to take over some day.... Do make sure he spends many hours deburring, sweeping, packing and other miserable jobs and machining too. He won't like it if he sees he's gonna take the reins someday but You, Him and the employees are going to be better off. A little community college won't hurt either. Good luck to both of you. -mateo -

This is an excellent student textbook for elementary machining:
"Machining and CNC Technology"
by Michael Fitzpatrick
McGraw-Hill 2005
Amazon

Used copies from $55.00, well worth the investment.
