This took it's time to arrive in my inbox. But definitely important There are many plant species that require a very specific fungal symbiont to do well. Our native blue berries for instance and most likely your poison ivy as well.
But we have known for 50 years or so that trees with mycorrhizae in Europe were able to withstand acid rain where a lack of these symbionts saw the trees die.
