Not that cold Paul, we have had no major frost yet. Plants like yacon and tropaieolum are still green and they die off as soon as temperatures drop below zero C for more than a day. Of course we worked outside today and it felt cold with a temperature of between 3 and 5 C but with a relative air humidity of over 90 % and a bit of a breeze while standing still.

They call this a lazy wind locally because it cuts right through you instead of going around you. But this has to do with air humidity more than with the actual wind force I think. In another life I experienced temperatures of below -25 C in drier mountains and that did not feel half as cold as a mild 5 degrees in Ireland.

It is not a big problem as long as you keep using your muscles to keep your core body temperature up. A few hours of log splitting with an ax, moving pile of stones between 2 and 50 kilos and some vigorous tree pruning kept me comfortable with three tin layers of clothes on the upper body. Last week with the temperature only slightly higher I had to get rid of two layers while working.
