It is definitely something to think about. When I did that I felt a niggle about the governments push in all that. Here it is illegal to pick up decent waste from supermarkets and feed this to pigs. It is also illegal to pick up fresh waste from restaurants and feed that to pigs or chickens. That food has to be dumped into landfill with all the paperwork there to prove it.

When you really start thinking it makes economic sense even at the same time as being ecological idiocy. What contributes more to the GDP of a country, an oil tanker that arrives in port without problems or one that breaks in half in front of the coast and pollutes all? Do some sums of all the money involved and you will soon see that the disaster wins hands down.

And it is the same with food. Expensive food brings in more money for those that have enough. Transporting and dumping "waste" that could still be reasonable food brings in even more people, wages and taxes and it is good for the "economy" and the GDP.

It is obvious that quality of life has nothing to do with the "economy" and that we might be a lot better off if there was no growth at all.

It's a crime with hunger so widespread. So much here is wasted in the harvesting & processing because it doesn't look saleable. Maybe half of it? When we grow it we don't toss it if it's edible. When we eat out we see people leaving tables loaded with food bound for the dumpster. I wasn't raised that way. Waste not, want not.

That's not the half of it. In fact so much food value is lost in processing people could eat healthier and eat less if they pass by the processed foodlike substances (Michael Pollan's term) & cooked & ate from basic food ingredients. And much less wasted by processing.

I have to confess that my first thought upon reading this was,
"Good--maybe
that will prompt people to eat more at home."

Unfortunately, with the kind of advertising we're seeing now ("Cheaper to
buy from KFC than fix it at home!" etc.), that may not happen.
