It should be noted that the UN report "Assessing the Environmental Impacts of
Consumption and Production: Priority Products and Materials" does not
directly recommend that the world shift to a vegan diet. In the conclusions
what it says is:
"Impacts from agriculture are expected to increase substantially due to
population growth, increasing consumption of animal products. Unlike fossil
fuels, it is difficult to look for alternatives: people have to eat. A
substantial reduction of impacts would only be possible with a substantial
worldwide diet change, away from animal products."
This suggests moving away from animal products but not necessarily
eliminating them. I think the author of the article mentioning the report
took the argument a bit to far.
It also is worth noting that this report places agriculture second in impact
and priority to fossil fuel use. This is a rather complex document which
looks at impacts from a number of points of view. The focus on fossil fuels
and agriculture is derived from the convergence of information from all the
distinct points of view on these two areas. The authors therefore consider
the conclusions robust.
