The big difference was the plow.  Without plows, it was easier for early inhabitants to exploit forest than prairie.  And they used the Forest Garden model more often, not relying as much on annual or grain crops (except for Maize), as Europeans.  Of course, the plains indians leaned heavily on herbivores - the Bison.

I don't think thats backed up by soil science and probably not a majority of native american tribes either. Which particular tribe is he thinking of?
