"Critics say it does not do enough to account for higher costs for farmers in the Northeast, who face long supply lines for feed and fuel, cold winters and a shorter feed-growing season than other parts of the country"

So, they are asking people to continue to subsidize a clearly bad business model?

It's not sustainable, that's why it's failing!

It would be like having folks growing bananas up here in the PNW demanding more subsidies because costs were increasing!

In the case of the dairy farmers they can look to move toward reducing their input costs by shifting to grass-fed.  Yes, it would be tough, and during some parts of the year will not result in making fresh product available (but that's where cheese comes in!).

Prices got ballooned along with everything else during bubble mania.  Many (not saying These farmers) farmers were scaled up for massive exports.  We've got to get away from importing and exporting food because in the long run transportation costs won't allow this activity.

How long do people think that the farmers would need help?  If they're thinking that this is just a temporary situation they're horribly wrong: much capital, which is becoming more precious with each day, will be wasted.

RICHMOND -- Three New England states are urging consumers to chip in and help save the region’s dairy farms, which are struggling with record-low prices being paid for their milk.
