Three weeks ago some wheat farmers’ associations in Canada, Australia,
and the U.S. announced they will coordinate acceptance of Monsanto’s
genetically modified (GMO) Roundup Ready wheat in their three countries.

Then, a week later, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine dropped
a bombshell study which states, “GM foods pose a serious health risk.”

The AAEM paper also notes, “Multiple animal studies have shown that GM
foods cause damage to various organ systems in the body.”

“Physicians are probably seeing the effects in their patients, but need
to know how to ask the right questions,” the study suggested. Because GM
foods are not identified it is impossible to match a person’s consumption
to any symptoms of illness.

Canada and the U.S. law provides for voluntary labeling of GM foods. Of
course no processor or retailer is stupid enough to label a can of corn, or
any other food, as genetically modified because few customers would buy it.
It is legal in Canada to label a food “non-GM”. But when some organic
food processors tried to do that the supermarkets pulled their product from
the shelves

In the Cowichan and Comox Valleys consumers not only eat GM products in
most of the processed foods they buy in supermarkets but we also get a shot
of mutant corn in our dairy products.

Some dairy farmers supplying Island Farms milk grow GM corn, which they
feed to their cows. Some claim the mutant genes from the corn cannot get
into the milk. But there are no valid scientific studies to verify that.

After noting that GM foods cause damage to human organ systems the AAEM
doctors’ association specifically connects, “infertility, immune
dysregulation, accelerated aging, dysregulation of genes associated with
cholesterol synthesis, insulin regulation, cell signaling and protein
formation, and changes in the liver, kidney, spleen, and gastrointestinal
system” as possible effects of consuming GM foods.

Read the labels before you buy. Any food containing corn, soybeans, canola
or cotton seed oil very probably contains GM ingredients. The AAEM advises
physicians to tell the public to avoid GM foods whenever possible.

Monsanto, with a battalion of lawyers and ruthless public relations
consultants, is usually on the frontlines ready for battle. So far they
have dropped a veil of silence over this issue.

Perhaps the scientists have had a bellyful of Monsanto’s intimidation and
bullying. The AAEM wants a moratorium on all GM food production while
long-term, advanced studies tell us the truth about the food we eat that
may be making us sick.

Response from the right

It is possible today to find a study, or studies, that will tell you just
about anything you want to believe about the food and drink we consume. I
am growing so tired of alarmist science that I am becoming deadened to what
they have to say.
