Can't recommend the book enough. The original work on Bt was relatively harmless (or so my microbiologist friend says) but Smith pointed out that by adding CaMV and ARM (markers) to Bt genetically infected plants new crops have been created which not only  spread Bt like weeds, but are very efficient at destroying the soil. ( Primarily because CaMV genes enable the bt gene to be active even in the roots.) The question he never really answered is whether CaMV is transmitted through pollen the way the Bt gene is. If this were the case a pretty terrifying scenario is in store.
