Get-To-Gather
Reliance Community Farms will host the 3rd Semi Annual Get-To-Gather on March 13-15, 2009.
1977 CR 232, Floresville, Texas 78114
Classes:
This time we will have two classes only.
Saturday will be greenhouse planning and erection. We will completely erect a 30X54 greenhouse including supports, sunshade and plastic. Bring gloves. The greenhouse will already be laid out and support poles in the ground but we will still show how it is laid out and how supports are put in the ground. Yes, this is probably a bigger greenhouse than you will build in your backyard but the principle is still the same.
Sunday we will build as many 10 grow bed aquaponic units as possible. The wood will be pre-cut and their will be a handout on the website with complete instructions on how to do this. We will construct the grow bed supports, cut the barrels in half, drill holes in the grow beds, install plumbing, fill with gravel and fill the fish tanks with water. Everyone will get a chance to do everything so there will be no doubt in your mind that you can build your own when you get back home. We will initialize each unit, start the water into the dump barrels, time the cycle several times and monitor the level of the ebb and flow water in the grow beds. In one unit only we will put the fish in and plant live plants and sow seeds. We plan to have several running units to demonstrate various stages of growth.
For those that cannot attend on the weekend. The 12 and 13th we will be getting everything ready including cutting parts for the aquaponic units and assembling at least one unit. If you would like to come by then please contact us.
Accommodations;
We will have one 8 x 40 room available for those who would like to sleep in a building. Bring cots or air mattress. The 1,300 sq ft covered porch will be available for those who prefer the open air but like a roof. We have plenty of room for tents or RV's. Limited electricity is available at our farm.
The bathroom with 2 composting toilets and shower will be available. Chunky dunking tank (cause most of us are to fat to be skinny dippers) will be available.
We have hosted several get-to-gathers in the last couple of years with free classes and free food and pot luck meals. Everyone spent allot of time preparing food. Mikie our guest cook at the last couple of conferences has agreed to come back again.To make things easier Mikie has offered to prepare the group meals. Contribution for supplies will be $50 each. Please send this in advance so the supplies can be purchased ahead of time. Meals will be Friday supper, Saturday breakfast, lunch and supper; and Sunday breakfast and lunch. Breakfast will include breakfast tacos, pancakes, biscuits, gravy. Friday night will be meat and vegetables. We plan on Steaks Sat. night. Sunday we plan on chicken and dumplings just like Paul's grandmother used to make. Leftovers will be heated up for a Sunday evening supper. If you are on a special diet or would prefer to bring all of your own food that is an option also.
Pets; Sorry, no pets allowed
Drugs and alcohol; There will be absolutely no illegal drugs allowed on the property, period. You are welcome to drink with moderation. If you have been drinking, don't plan on driving. We will take your keys away. We don't need the liability problems!!!. Smoking will be allowed in designated area only about 150 yards from the gardens.
Bring note taking supplies, work clothes and shoes, hats, gloves and other protection from the sun as needed. Classes will be outdoors. Please remember some people have sensitivities to fragrances and be considerate.
For those not to tired, we will have an evening campfire and solve all the worlds problems.
If TEOTWAWKI or TSHTF occurs then this event will be canceled without notice.
