Mystery illness hits caves in Vt., N.Y.

We should worry about the threat to area crops, to be sure. But we should also be worrying about (can't we at least rise to "taking notice of"?) this further piece of evidence that biological systems are breaking down, all around us, in front of our eyes. And surely it is obvious that our (Homo "sapiens") own fate is tied up with this advancing breakdown?
But what will it take to get our attention on such matters, as opposed to American Idol?
We're in the shit deep, and we don't even notice the smell.
