No, chickens and winter squash don't mix. Guineas-and-winter squash
works well for me, however (for control of squash bug). For the first
time this year, the guineas did abuse the growing fruits a bit--I lost a
few to determined eating, but not enough to conclude that they weren't
still paying their way with the bug patrol.

As if it isn't already a zoo around here, LOL!    I was going to try to get away with NOT having guineas at this house, LOL.   First thing my husband wanted to know after we moved and someone was selling baby guineas was 'why aren't we getting some?'    I told him it was too much to tend baby guineas right after the move, but conceded to raise some next spring.

At our last house I got sick of hearing the guineas at our large living room window in the winter.  They were wonderful tick patrols and we had very few there, but they were so obnoxiously loud and liked to come roost on the outside sill where the sound seemed to echo even louder into the house.   Them and the geese could raise quite a raucus, but both birds are so utilitarian that I'll be putting up with their noise with gratitude I suppose now that we're more settled in.   We have tall oak trees here and lots of tiny ticks, so I DO need some guineas.

blessings,
Carrie
