The Ogallala aquifer is the largest freshwater aquifer in the world. It
underlies parts of eight states in the midwest "breadbasket", critical to
the food economy. The Ogallala is a fossil aquifer formed 2 to 6 million
years ago and today is not recharged significantly by ground water.
Overpumping for agricultural irrigation has already dropped the water level
measurably, and some areas on the fringes have dry wells now. Detailed maps
at http://www.choicesmagazine.org/2003-1/2003-1-04.htm . The website goes
into options and policies for regulation and conservation.
