In our demonstration garden, we opened up a space in the mulch to plant in. We planted potatoes under the mulch as she did. It worked.
Weeds were no problem. Even the blue weed [one of 12 worst weeds in America] was not a problem. A few did come up through the mulch but were very weak. Bermuda grass loved it. I hand dug it out. No-till works. When it doesn't, the problem in not the method but the gardener.
I am teaching a workshop in Lubbock TX next month and in Alpine TX on Mar 24-25.
