Many farmers in developing countries recognise the need to use safe and
sustainable farming methods, but much of the information and advice
available to them, influenced by chemical companies, promotes high levels
of external inputs. The inputs recommended are not only environmentally
unsound but are often too costly for small-scale farmers.
The aim of the international programme is to develop, improve and promote
techniques for sustainable land use in rural, peri-urban and urban areas in
the tropics and sub-tropics. The main focus is poverty alleviation through
the improvement of existing farming systems and livelihoods to increase
food security, long-term productivity, safe food production and
environmental protection.
Our overall goal is to assist in shaping a future that reduces global
poverty through sustainable management of the world's natural resources. In
the long term, HDRA aims to see this achieved through adoption of organic
land-use systems. However, we recognise that in the context of the
countries concerned, certified organic farming, is not always applicable.
To be appropriate in tropical systems we are aware that we need to support,
develop and promote agricultural systems that use a wide range of
techniques to achieve sustainable land use.
