BOOK REVIEW: Dirt Cheap Gardening
by Rhonda Massingham Hart
Reviewed by Gina Dalquest (ginaagain@aol.com)

Gardening should be an extremely frugal activity. Unfortunately,
over the last century, many of the basic skills and knowledge
that allowed our ancestors to survive the winter on what they
grew during the summer have disappeared.

Walk into your local nursery and you will be overwhelmed by
the choices, not to mention the prices, of gardening equipment,
plants, seeds and books. Many of the books are essentially
pretty pictures with little usable information, but 'Dirt Cheap
Gardening' is an exception.

Rhonda Massingham Hart is a master gardener with years of
experience. She's filled 'Dirt Cheap Gardening' with thousands
of ideas for saving money and growing healthier gardens without
investing a huge amount of time or money.

The book covers just about everything you need to know about
planning a garden, preparing soil and inexpensive means of
acquiring plants. It has practical advice about buying and
maintaining tools, fighting pests and disease, and harvesting
and saving the fruits (and vegetables!) of your labor.

Hart gives information on choosing the right plants for your
location, conserving water, as well as recipes for mixing your
own potting soil, fertilizer, and safe organic pesticides.

Over the years I have collected a shelf full of gardening books
and magazines, but this small paperback won’t be joining
those books on the shelf. 'Dirt Cheap Gardening' is tucked
away in the pocket of my garden apron so that I have it when
I need it!
