The Kerr Center for Sustainable Agriculture in Poteau announced the winners
of its annual essay contest for Oklahoma high school juniors and seniors on
May 10. The theme of the 2004 essay contest was “Why Schools Should Serve
Locally-Grown Foods.”

The first place prize of $750 went to Dakota Allison, a junior at Canton
High School. The second place prize of $500 was awarded to Erin Shores, a
senior at Kiowa High School. Three honorable mention prizes of $250 each
went to Caroline Palmer, a senior at Salina High School; Holly Goralewicz, a
senior at Okarche High School; and Chance Simpson, a junior at Timberlake
High School in Kremlin.

The Kerr Center received 154 entries from around the state, which was about
twice as many as the 2003 contest. Last year’s contest theme was protecting
farmland from unwanted development.

In their essays, students expressed concerns about student health, about
the quality of the food they eat, and the need to increase economic
opportunities for small farms within the state.

This is the third year for the contest. Each spring, students are invited
to write a persuasive essay of 800-1000 words on a given agricultural or
food system topic with current relevance to the larger society.

Winners were chosen by an independent panel. Judges looked at how well the
writer developed his/her ideas, used good writing skills, paid attention to
details and facts, and elicited an emotional response.

The Kerr Center, a non-profit educational foundation, is currently working
with state and federal agencies on a pilot project to serve Oklahoma-grown
produce this fall at a few Oklahoma schools.

Farm-to-school information and the winning essays can be accessed at
www.kerrcenter.com.
