USDA EXTENDS COMMENT PERIOD ON PROPOSAL TO
EXEMPT 100 PERCENT ORGANIC
ENTITIES FROM MARKETING ORDER PROMOTION
ASSESSMENTS

WASHINGTON, December 23, 2003 The U.S.
Department of Agriculture
Agricultural Marketing Service is extending
the period in which to submit
written comments until Feb. 2, 2004, on
proposed changes to 28 fruit and
vegetable marketing order programs that
authorize market promotion
activities. The original deadline for
submitting written comments had been
Jan. 2, 2004.

The proposal would exempt producers and
marketers of solely 100 percent
organic products from paying commodity
promotion assessments.

The Organic Trade Association requested the
30-day extension to provide
additional time to review the proposal and
the potential impacts on
affected entities. The notice of the comment
period extension will appear
in the December 30, 2003, Federal Register.

Details of the proposed exemption appeared in
the Dec. 2 Federal Register.
The proposed rule and public comments
received are available for viewing
at:
>.

The 2002 Farm Bill directed USDA to issue
regulations exempting any person
who produces and markets solely 100 percent
organic products and who does
not produce any conventional or non-organic
products from paying
assessments under a commodity promotion law.

Comments may be sent to the Docket Clerk,
Marketing Order Administration
Branch, AMS Fruit and Vegetable Programs,
