Hi Bert,
Following up on Tom's question, I intend to let my figs get frost bitten (light one in Thornhill a couple of nights ago) and then move them inside to my cold room. My cold room only maintains a temp of about 50 throughout the winter and the figs start to wake in late Feb - too soon for my liking. I have room in my attached double garage, however, the temp drops considerably in the garage, the potted plants definitely freeze solid. I could put them on shelves by the house wall and possibly jury-rig a styro buffer from the main garage; alas, that is work!
After seeing what Adriano in Oakville does over winter and the severe conditions he puts his plants through, am I overly concerned. I like the garage idea because I can inhibit wake-up till possibly April - something more manageable with my minimal house space.
I am building a six by ten unheated greenhouse in my back and eventually hope to overwinter many items there. Don't know if it will be ready this year even though I have the four corners in the ground. Depends on the weather.
Any recommendations?

Off to get apples from the Mennonites todays - two bushels of Spys on order and a half a bushel of Honeycrisp - and lots of butternut squash. Supper at the Crossroads too.
