We just used MariaDB (open source MySQL) to update part of our server infrastructure from old 5.X servers. Totally seamless.

I'd recommend MySQL. It's part of the "LAMP" stack so there's tons of online tutorials, documentation, etc, and will be a great entry point to relational databases.
