Hi INW,

I'm trying to help a visiting scholar get set up in the area. Here are the things we're trying to figure out:

1. Is there a list of WIFI access points in Carrboro/Chapel Hill? I know UNC campus, Town of Carrboro WIFI and some coffee shops (Open Eye Cafe, etc). Where else can someone access "free" WIFI?

2. What are some good, low cost options for home internet service? They do not have a home phone, so any services that require one are probably excluded. I believe they are now offering DSL sans home phone, but I'm not sure. My recommendation was Time Warner Cable and Road Runner Lite. Other ideas?

3. How about a phone? I advised to stick with mobile over landline, but am not sure what options exist for a visitor. I imagine there are SIM cards that you can pre-pay and then use for international & local calls. Otherwise, should they look for a 12 month cellular plan?

4. Are there any good deals with purchasing pre-paid calling cards? I've always heard about this, but have no experience with such. Any advice is appreciated.

Lastly, if anyone has an old bicycle to sell/donate, then I'm sure this academic researcher would appreciate it. They are trying to keep costs as reasonable as possible, considering all will be left behind when they return to Europe.

Thank you for your help!
David
