If they are going to spend a bunch of money on stimulus, I'd
love to see some of it be on expanding the reach and speed of broadband. With
that said, the industry has already been given all kinds of incentives and has
basically screwed everyone, so it would have to be done in a manner that
requires performance. From: internetworkers-bounces AT lists.ibiblio.org
[mailto:internetworkers-bounces AT lists.ibiblio.org] On Behalf Of Greg
Brown You can get 100/100 meg service
in Wilson today. To your home. For not a lot of money. FiOS
is coming soon (so they say) and that has the potential to bring somewhere in
the range of 50/50 meg to a house though from what I hear the throughput is
capped at a much lower rate. On Wed, Jan 21, 2009 at 12:02 PM, Michael Czeiszperger <michael AT czeiszperger.org> wrote: http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/01/21/does-broadband-need-a-stimulus/ "Running a new fiber-optic cable to every American home may well
increase competition in broadband providers, but it isn't needed to deliver
high-speed Internet service. Current cable modems use just one of the more than
100 channels on a typical cable system and can often offer speeds of 16
megabits per second or more. The next generation of modems, using a technology
called Docsis 3, allows several of those video channels to be combined to offer
what ultimately can be Internet service as fast as 1 gigabit per second — 10
times faster than is offered in Japan, which generally is regarded as having
the fastest broadband infrastructure." _________________________________________________________
