Tom,

If you are learning photography, digital is really great since the file will
record the shutter speed, aperture, ISO, etc, and you can figure out why
your photos didn't turn out well (or at least as expected).

I assume you have a digital SLR? If you do, look at a 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8
lens. An f/1.4 lens will pass 4x as, much light as an f/2.8, and 8x as much
as an f/4.0 (assuming all shot wide open). A Fixed focal length lens will
likely be sharper wide open then a zoom lens wide open (most lenses are
sharpest 2-3 stops below the maximum aperture, though lens designs vary).
