Calvin,

There's an article in today's Chapel Hill Herald, "Social Services still seeking toys for children in need." The URL is

Social Services still seeking toys for children in need

CHAPEL HILL -- Could Santa come up short with toys for good girls and boys in Orange County this year?

How could the jolly old elf run out of toys before the last little girl or boy gets a gift this year? It could happen, but Nancy Coston, director of Orange County Department of Social Services, is hoping it won't -- and she's asking people for help.

DSS is working with Toys for Tots, a program run by U.S. Marines, to collect and distribute enough toys to give two or three Christmas presents each to 2,000 to 2,400 children in Orange County who are DSS clients.

The children range in age from newborns to teenagers, Coston said, and their parents will be allowed to select two or three gifts for each of their children at the distribution site beginning next Tuesday.

"We just don't want to end up over there, and go, 'Uh, oh,' " Coston said. "That would be a bad moment."

Howdy,

I have some children's toys that I was going to give my nephews for Christmas but then I found something better. Rather than going through the hassle of returning them, I thought I'd just donate them to a local charity drive. But I'm having trouble locating one. Usually I look up Toys for Tots but there does not seem to be a local contact.

Can anyone recommend a similar program?

Calvin
