Yeah, but is it USB 3.0 compliant? ;)

I am a big fan of LaCie triple interface Big Disk external hard drives (FireWire, FireWire 800 and USB 2.0) for all data backup purposes. I've burned a grand total of one DVD in my lifetime. I use the external HD at least once a week. All depends on what you want/need.

Good luck with your search, Roger!

I have a USB 2.0 external DVD burner that I use with my HP laptop and it
works like a charm. Once the software is installed you just plug it in
whenever you need it and you're good to go. If you want to go that route,
make sure that you have USB 2.0 ports on your computer as opposed to USB
1.1. Your brand new computer should have USB 2.0 ports, but it doesn't hurt
to double-check and make sure. If you plug it in to a USB 1.1 port,
throughput will be rather pathetic. The big advantage of going the external
route is that you can move this drive from system to system, for example in
a few years when it's time to upgrade your computer, or if you want to use
it with a laptop, or if you have a buddy who want to borrow it for a special
project or whatever. I bought mine (Lite-On, I think) something like a year
and a half or two years ago, so I'm sure you can get a good one for far less
than the $169 I paid for mine back then.

Anyone had any bad experiences with brands and models that
they would be willing to share?
Anyone had experiences with USB DVD burners using 2.0 and 1.1
USB?
Anyone out there have any opinions on backups for home systems,
burning old VHS tapes to DVDs? I can't wait to have a DVD of me
doing the twist at Christmas in 1960 again (and again.)

Any of the IDE dvd burners out now should be fine. lite-on, plextor,
etc. I don't have any experience with the usb external burners.
