No, I'm sure there are web design firms that understand the principles of
SEO and can design quality sites with that are search engine friendly. But
I have yet to run into one web design firm that was capable of taking a site
that doesn't rank to the top of the SERP's. Perhaps there are good web
design firms that have an in house SEO team that is capable. I just see SEO
as an entirely different business and its difficult to do both well. If you
guys are good both then that's awesome and I'm sure you are raking in the
dollars.

Definitely there are a lot of fly by night operations that will take your
money and deliver nada in the search engines. In fact there is a pretty big
SEO shop in RTP doing just that.
