I would like to move all existing mail from my Linux/Thunderbird account

Alternatively, can I migrate to Thunderbird on OS X without loosing any
folder structure?
TBird to TBird is probably just a matter of moving your mail directories and files to your new profile's mailbox location on the Mac.
If OS/X mail uses the mbox format, that may be similar. Have you checked for an importer function in this client?
A universal alternate would be to use IMAP. Setup a new account in TBird and upSync your existing mail to it. This puts it on the server. Then just connect with any other IMAP client and it will sync.
