The term "Black and Tan" was originally used in and around county Limerick in Ireland to refer to a pack of hounds. It was subsequently applied to British Army Irregulars sent to put down the Easter uprising in 1920. In that context it referred to the colors of their uniforms and, because of the "pack of dogs" tie-in it was mildly insulting. In Ireland it is sometimes used to describe a popular drink made with 1/2 stout and 1/2 light ale, more commonly called a "half-and-half." The popularity of the name tends to depend on where you are in Ireland. It can be used without starting a fight in Protestant areas of Ireland and in most of the rest of the British Empire.
