Subject: Re: Question about literacy in Durham county

Durham County has a higher level of illiteracy than Wake or Orange. But 36
percent is not a reliable figure without some context. Illiteracy tends to be
overreported or reported out of context.

Stats we prefer

22 percent of Durham County Adults lack high school diplomas
1 in 10 Durham adults has less than a 9th grade education.
24 percent of Durham City Residents have been determined to be "functionally
illiterate," which means they cannot read a roadmap, job application, or
daily newspaper.

Sources: 2000 US Census; National Survey of Adult Literacy, 1998
extrapolation of 1993 national data sample.
