By DAVE MENCONI, STAFF WRITER

Legendary banjo master Tommy Thompson of the Red Clay Clay Ramblers
died this afternoon of complications from Alzheimer's disease. He
was 65 years old.

Thompson co-founded the Chapel Hill-based bluegrass band in 1972.
Among the Ramblers' most acclaimed projects was "A Lie of the Mind,"
a 1985 theatrical production with writer/director Sam Shepard. The
group also appeared in Shepard's 1993 movie "Silent Tongue," as a
medicine show band.
