FWIW, hat's another one of those words that derives from an
interpretation of a Biblical verse. According to the Book of Genesis,
Onan was the son of Judah, and Genesis 38:9 states "And Onan knew that
the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto
his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground." According to
that 'spilling your seed on the ground' is the 'Sin of Onan', from which
comes onanism.
