I know we had a discussion recently about the ratio of IIS to Apache web
servers on the Internet. While many of you are probably aware of this site,
I only came across "The Netcraft Web Server Survey" today at:
http://www.netcraft.com/survey/
"The Netcraft Web Server Survey is a survey of Web Server software usage on
Internet connected computers. We collect and collate as many hostnames
providing an http service as we can find, and systematically poll each one
with an HTTP request for the server name. In the September 2001 survey we
received responses from 32,398,046 sites."
According to their survey, 60 of web sites are run on Apache vs. about 30%
on IIS, even though half of the computers are running Windows. They explain
this as many computers running Windows run one site, where as most
Unix/Linux computers host multiple sites.
There is also a historical trend analysis of % of Vulnerable Microsoft-IIS
SSL Sites by exploit.
Anyway, so good numbers to prepare people for the next round of discussion.
