So, you just installed the latest version of Red Hat, hooked
it up to your DSL, configured your static IP, have mail,
POP, IMAP, ftp, DNS and apache all configured just right.
You write up some really cool HTML, complete with nifty
javascript tricks that scroll nifty text across the bottom
of the web browser.
Everything is just great. You post your resume on your
website, point your friends at your own little weblog,
and one day you're showing your elite web page to your
boss, but all of your flash and style sheets have been
replaced with one, cryptic phrase:
w3 0wn j00!!!1, cuZ w3 R kRaD! Pip-pip.
Uh oh. You assure your boss that you are not soon to
be under investigation for breaking into the Pentegon
and just stare at your screen.
What happened? Looks like some British script kiddies
have a little too much time on their hands. Could this
have been prevented? Yes!
This Thursday, Josep Guallar-Esteve and Mark Fowle will
give us all an introduction to Linux security. They'll
cover proper configuration, keeping up to date, as well
as a tool or two for making sure your system is as
secure as it can be.
Your choices are simple, show up at Dreyfus auditorium
(directions at http://trilug.org/directions.html) and
learn how to be secure, or continue running around the
Internet with your pants down.
Oh, and we'll have free pizza and giveaways, if you
don't have enough incentive yet!
Mike
PS Thanks to attrition.org for their unique look at
hacking around the world. Pip-pip.
