when you read or browse this study, you should keep in mind that they are
sampling opinions of americans; they are not actually looking at why dot
coms failed but why most Americans think they have failed. this amounts to
meme testing of a sort. if you read/hear/see enough news stories about
'greed' causing the dot coms failures, you will most likely mention
'greed' as a preceived cause when asked. 67% of americans are aware that
dot coms are having problems, but 33% are not (1/3 of all americans not
knowing is somehow bigger news to me) for example. the rest of the
questions are now asked only to the remaining 2/3. of those there is a
further divide of those who are internet users or not. of the internet
users, only 8% say that one or more of their favorite web sites has
vanished.
