Open Information Week at UNC - October 16 - 20
Digital information raises exciting and perplexing possibilities for
creators, publishers, libraries and people at work and play. Separating
content from object challenges publishers and instantaneous distribution and
collaboration challenge traditional production models for software and other
intellectual products. The Open Source and Open Software movements have
brought these issues to the public consciousness by providing alternative
models for the production of software infrastructure. Less prominent in the
public eye yet, but equally important is the cautious dance that libraries
and publishers have engaged in around issues of ownership of intellectual
property versus licensing access to property. The issues run the gambit
from economics to individual privacy and we are at a generational crossroads
where policies and precedents are shaping the very nature and roles
information plays in people's lives. UNC and the SILS have a long history
of studying how information and human existence interact at personal and
social levels. Recent events have catalyzed this tradition in several ways.
First, the emergence of several digital library projects at UNC and the
larger research triangle community have brought together theoreticians and
practitioners to discuss and build alternatives and extensions to physical
libraries. Second, the ibiblio project has recently been launched as a
hands-on testbed and development environment for studying the issues related
to open source software. These streams of work will advance aggressively
over the coming decade and we aim to energize thinking and participation
with a week of events devoted to the general concept of OPEN INFORMATION.
Join us for public lectures and discussions October 16-20, 2000 on the
