Of course, the telephone companies don't want to pay for it -- they'd
prefer tax incentives. Time Warner thinks that cable will provide all the
necessary broadband to the boonies, just give them a little time. <smirk>
But does this help bridge the "digital divide"? Consider the "open access"
requirements for Web pages coming to a head in DC's regulatory cauldron;
remember that the newest 'Net gig is surfing on limited display / bandwidth
devices. And what about the rest of the world -- can they access stuff
developed for broadband? Is widespread broadband in the US something we
want and need badly enough to fund with tax incentives and pocket change?
Are there political ramifications, like if we don't help and encourage the
phone companies, cable absconds with the golden goose? Does satellite and
radio tech play into this too?
